Son of Dr J.W. Fairbridge and Sarah Armstrong 1800-1869 who arrived Cape Town 25 March 1824. Charles was born 22 May 1824, died 4 July 1893.

Member for parliament for Caledon, 1st Cape Parliament, 1853. Member for Cape Town for 1st Constitution Parliament, 1872. Solicitor, President of Cape Law Society, Admiralty Proctor, Queens Proctor, Bibliophile, Trustee of the S.A. Public library, the Grey Collection of Books and m.s.s etc. and of the S.A. Museum. The device of the Coat of Arms of the Cape Colony was entrusted to him 1875. Collector of a fine library of over 13000 volumes, largest collection of books existing (then) relating to S.Africa, now in possession of the nation. A notable figure in the society of Cape Town, the hospitality of his house being extended to all visitors of distinction.
He qualified as an attorney and was appointed a partner of the firm in 1847. He became senior partner in 1852 and held that position for 41 years. At the age of 30 he was elected a Member of Parliament. In 1883 he became the first President of the Cape Law Society, a position he held for 10years.
said of Fairbridge: "He was a very popular man both in and out of the office."

Charlie's son William George Fairbridge also served as a partner of Fairbridges for 31 years and was senior partner from 1908 to 1925. He was highly respected and admired. Charlie's daughter, Dorothea Fairbridge, was a celebrated intellectual and writer.

His nephew, William Ernest Fairbridge (1863-1943) became General Manager of the Argus Printing and Publishing company. He was the first Mayor of Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe).

Fairbridge's grandson, Ronald Fairbridge Currey, was headmaster of both Michaelhouse in Natal (now KZN) and St. Andrews College in Grahamstown.
