Ruth was the first child of Henry Bascom Nance and his first wife, Laura Emeline (Mullenix) Nance.

She grew up in Iowa and moved to California as a young woman. She was the mother of Joseph Iven Berry who was given up for adoption and renamed Joseph Stanford Torrence. She was not married to his father. She later married Stoney Howell Byas and George Butler Parisen.
