He lived life fully, serving in the United States Army “Lone Star” 49th Armored Division; he was a member of the United States Forestry Service. He retired from Southwestern Laboratories in 2003.
He couldn't have been a better cousin to me. He was more like a brother than a cousin. He was kind, gentle, fun and giving. He played the guitar and was a big Johnny Cash fan. The latter may have been the only thing we ever disagreed on but I never had the heart to tell him. :-)
His greatest pleasures were sports, ham radio, photography, music, playing guitar, traveling and spending time with family, especially his beloved cousins, grandchildren, and his little "doggy" Cornbread.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D., Jr. and Charlie Mae "Mott" of Atlanta and DeRidder, Louisiana. Also by two half sisters, Violet Moore Benroth (1913 - 1998) and Belle Moore George (1915 - 1998).
He and his dad especially loved dogs, always rather large ones. John D left Cornbread, his present housemate and pal, to survive him, at least for a little while as Cornbread was old and in very bad shape physically. He was euthanized and cremated the same day. They certainly loved each other!
He is survived by his daughters and sona-in-law, Kimberly and husband Johnny Holt from Willis, Texas and Jennifer "Gigi" and husband Andrew "Andy" Green from Dayton, Texas; grandchildren Chance, Matthew and Rachel; great grandchildren Jaden, Rylan and soon to arrive Chance Wyatt; a host of cousins, family and friends that loved him.
John D and then wife, Gaylon, had the two daughters, Kim and Jennifer. Gaylon died when they were young.
Graveside services for John D. will be Saturday October 21 at 11 AM at Laws Chapel Cemetery in Atlanta, Texas. Hanner funeral home is handling the details and flowers/plants can be sent to Hanner for placement on the grave closer to October 21.
