Kim Abel, 64, died Thursday, September 14, 2017, at her home in Dallas, Texas after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Kim was born November 8, 1952 in Gainesville, Florida, where she had an idyllic childhood with her family. She studied ballet and other performing arts at Joni Messler Studio of Dance until leaving at the young age of 16 to make her way in New York City as a dancer.

Kim was an accomplished professional ballet dancer, having been a principal dancer for Eglevsky Ballet under the direction of Edward Villella. Following that, she became a nationally respected teacher and ballet mistress. She based her principles and teaching on Maggie Black, her teacher and mentor for 20 years. During her career, Kim was a ballet mistress for the Pennsylvania and Milwaukee Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theater, Ballet Oklahoma, Edward Villella and Dancers, and the Eglevsky Ballet. She taught company class for American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, as well as technique classes for Southern Methodist University, Texas Christian University, and Barnard College. She especially enjoyed working with the students at Booker T. Washington High School of the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas.

But her greatest happiness was her marriage to husband Ric Abel and raising their son Alexander 'Buddy' Abel. She met Ric when both were dancing with Eglevsky Ballet. After his retirement from dance, they settled in Dallas where Kim taught ballet and commuted frequently to New York City to teach.

Her father, Mosco A. Vickers, predeceased Kim. In addition to her husband and son, Kim leaves her mother, Georgia 'Pete' Vickers of Gainesville, FL, her mother-in-law Brownie Work of Sedona, AZ, her father-in-law Jim Abel of Santa Fe, NM, her sisters Kay Patterson (John) of Gainesville, FL, and Alice Vickers (John Davis) of Tallahassee, FL, her sister-in-law Vicci Compton (Brian) of Santa Rosa, CA and her brother-in-law Cris Abel (Patte) of Antioch, CA, her nieces and nephews Teal Patterson, Jack Vickers-Davis, Ariadne Vickers-Davis, Christian Nolan Abel, and Sierra Abel, as well as big loving families from her side and Ric's side. She also leaves behind many close friends who helped her during her illness, especially her best friend, Cindi Hart, who helped care for her up to the end.

A memorial service will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, Kim would want you to support the arts in your community or give to another charity that supports those in need of help.
