The family moved to Sioux Falls in 1937, and Jean was a graduate of Washington High School Class of 1944. Jean followed in her mother’s footsteps and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1948.

Following her graduation, she began working as a Health and Physical Education Teacher in East Grand Forks, MN. Jean took a teaching position in Duluth, MN in 1949, and it is there she met her husband, Herb.

Jean was united in marriage with Herbert Frederick on June 30, 1951 in Sioux Falls, SD. They made their home in Duluth. To this union they were blessed with three sons, David, Tom and Scott. After the marriage dissolved she returned to Sioux Falls in 1966.

She raised her sons while working as a Physical Education teacher for the Sioux Falls Public School System. Jean instructed special education students at Irving and Emerson schools before retiring in 1988.

On October 1, 1994, after being single for more than 25 years, Jean was united in marriage with Arnold Knutson. Arne was a widower, having lost his first wife who happened to be Jean’s cousin, just less than a year before that. Arne died in 2008.

Jean was a strong individual. She had to be to withstand losing her siblings during her teenage years; to undergo more than a dozen surgeries (she was a 1970 breast cancer survivor) and to endure several years of chronic arthritic pain.

Jean was in assisted living at Trailridge Retirement Community at the time of her death.
