Plattsburgh - Dr. Charles A. Blood, 72, of 3 Prospect Ave., died Tuesday, January 3, 1995 at the CVPH Medical Center.

He was born in White River Junction, Vt., Sept. 6, 1923, the son of Charles A. and Bessie (Carr) Blood.

He was a 1941 graduate of Hartford High School in White River Junction. He earned a B. S. degree from the University of Vermont in 1950, an M. S. degree in 1952 and in 1956 a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Lehigh University.

He married Madeline Hutchins in 1948 in the Methodist Church in White River Junction.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served from February 1943 to February 1946 with his tour of duty in the United States and Guam. Dr. Blood was a research chemist and research development supervisor with E. I. DuPont in Buffalo from 1956 to 1962, then joined SUNY Plattsburgh's science and mathematics division at the rank of associate professor of Chemistry. He was promoted to full professor in 1969. He retired effective Dec. 29, 1994.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church; Washington Lodge No. 3 F&AM of Burlington, Vt.; the American Chemical Society; past president of Northern New York Section, a member of the Division of Chemical Education, American Chemical Society; was a Sigma Xi organizer and was the first president of the Plattsburgh Sigma Xi Club; a member of the North Country Flying Club and its past president; a member of the Civil Air Patrol and its past operation officer; a member of the American Legion; past member of the National Ski Patrol; a New York certified swim official from 1966 to present; president of Champlain Valley Chapter 1978, second vice of the NYSCSOA Inc. state organization 1985-87. He was presently active in the Plattsburgh City Republican Committee and the Plattsburgh Chapter Barbarshoppers since 1964.

"Dr. Blood enjoyed a reputation as being a marvelous teacher, devoted friend and dedicated campus leader," said SUNY Plattsburgh President, Horace Judson. "He shared my passion for chemistry, but most importantly, he shared his abundant knowledge with several generations of students who will remember him as a kind and gentle person as well as a gifted leader. He will be sorely missed by his students, by countless alumni and particularly by his faculty colleges.

Dr. Blood's research in his field focused on"Degradation Studies on Vitamin A and Related Compunds" and "Organic Mechanisms and Kinetics," and his research was supported by two SUNY research foundation grants.

He served two terms as chairman of SUNY Plattsburgh's Chemistry Department from 1968 to 1974 and from 1976 to 1988. His college service also inluded rules as a faculty senator, as a member of Intercollegiate Athletic Board and Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee, as a fraternity advisor and as a member of the Cardinal Booster Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Charles A. Blood and his wife, Judy, of South Glens Falls; two grandchildren, Amber and Andrew of South Glens Falls; and several nieces a nd nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the R. W. Walker Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 7, at the United Methodist Church with burial Monday, Jan 9, in West Lebanon, N. H., following a graveside service there Monday at 2 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the Plattsburgh College Foundation, SUNY Plattsburgh.
