17th and Last Mughal Emperor. Accomplished poet under the name Zafar. Unexpectedly ascended to the throne after the ouster of his younger brother Jahangir. During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 he was made honorary leader, as a man revered equally by both Hindus and Muslims. Upon the failure of the Mutiny he was stripped of his throne by the British and exiled to Rangoon, where he died. His Dargah is considered a place of pilgrimage for Burma's Muslim minority, and is often visited by Pakistani and Indian politicos.
