Elna Muriel Derry, an 89-year-old resident of North Kansas City, died on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 at the North Kansas City Hospital. She was a former resident of Mercer County.
A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Home in Princeton, with burial in the Princeton Cemetery.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the funeral home.
Mrs. Derry was born on April 22, 1922 in Mercer county, the daughter of Hugh and Inez Overton Craig. She attended the Wilds School, where her mother was the teacher. She graduated in 1939 from Princeton High School and later that year graduated from Parsons Beauty Academy in St. Joseph.
She was married on July 4, 1940 at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Trenton to A. Russell Derry, a professional baseball player for the Kansas City Blues. During the next 19 years, Mrs. Derry accompanied her husband as his baseball career took them to places such as New York City, Havana, Cuba, Philadelphia, PA, Rochester, NY and Columbus, OH. At the end of each season, the couple came home to their Mercer County farm. After her husband's retirement, the couple farmed full time, raising Hereford cattle and row crops of corn and soybeans. She also maintained a large vegetable garden surrounded by flowers.
She was a member of the DAR Lovely Purchase Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and the Baptist Church.
Mrs. Derry is survived by a daughter, Judy Mahoney and her husband, Wesley of Kansas City; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell, on Oct. 26, 2004.
Memorials are suggested to either the Russell and Elna Derry Award at the Princeton R-5 School or the Russ Derry Family Athletic Scholarship at North Central Missouri College. They may be left at or mailed to the funeral home.
