My GG-Grandfather, Henry Johnston Burns was born in Mount Chestnut, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He was the third of ten children born to Alexander Burns & Sarah McDowell and was later raised in Middlesex Township, Butler County, Pa. Henry's father would marry two more times after the death of his mother Sarah. His siblings were: Robert, John M., Hannah, William Beatty, Samuel, Lydia Ann, James, Alexander and Isabella.

Henry married Matilda Ann Criner in Saxonburg, Butler County, Pennsylvania on November 24, 1866. They had 8 children together; John Francis, Sarah Loretta, Henry Lewis, Mary E., Rose Leonza, Georgianna, Hannah M. and Everett Floyd.

Corporal Henry J. along with his brothers Private John M. and Private Robert enlisted in Bulter County, Pa. Henry and John served in the Infantry, 103rd Regiment, Company E of the Pa. Volunteers. Robert served in Company D, Regiment 6, Artillery. Many soldiers of the 103rd regiment were captured at the seige of Plymouth, including his brother John M. who died at Andersonville Prison.

After the war Henry went back to farming in Middlesex Township. He died the age of 79 on September 08, 1923 in Harrison Township, Allegheny County, Pa.

Henry and wife Matilda are laid to rest together in Glade Run United Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Located in Middlesex Township, 1091 Pittsburgh Road, Valencia,
Butler County, Pennsylvania.

Henry J. Burns, aged 70, a Civil War veteran and a resident of Middlesex Township fifty years, died at 5:10 pm yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.J. Stull, in Natrona Ht's. after a lingering illness. He went to the home of his daughter last winter.
Mr. Burns served in Company C, 103rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, in the Civil War and had been engaged in farming most of his life. He is survived by his widow and sons, John F. of Apollo, Pa. and Henry J. of Freeport, and two daughters, Mrs. W.J. Stull of Natrona and Mrs. John Henry of Natrona, also one brother James Burns of Kittaning.
Funeral services will be held at his late residence in Middlesex Township Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will be in Glade Run cemetery.
