John M. married Ellen Jane Snow (1835-1917) of Cranberry Township, Bulter County, May 29, 1863 in Middlesex Township, Butler County, Pennsylvania, where they made their home. John was a farmer until he enlisted in the military. They had no children.
John was only 22 years of age when he died of scorbutus as a prisoner of war while in Andersonville Prison in Georgia.
John M. Burns served in the Civil War as a Private in the Infantry, 103rd Regiment, Company E. He was mustered in at age 20 on December 7, 1861 in Butler County,Pa.
He was captured on April 20, 1864 in Plymouth, North Carolina and held at Andersonville Prison in Georgia until his death on October 3, 1864.
John served in the same regiment and company as his brother Henry Johnson Burns (1844-1923), my gg grandfather and at the same time as brother Robert.
John M. is buried in Andersonville National Cemetery in Sumter County, Georgia, Grave #10260
