Roy Cary Wehman, 94, of Union City died Monday July 17, 2017, at Union City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, in Union City. The Rev. Tim Atkins will officiate. Burial will follow in East View Cemetery with Military Honors.
Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday.
White-Ranson Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Dan Smith, Bill Townes, Hunter Smith, Will Townes, Phillip Wehman, Dr. Steve Harpole, John Harpole, Ed McAlister and Brad Jones.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of his former Boy Scout Troop No. 52; Marla Crabtree; Elizabeth Doughten; Kay Craddock; the staff of Etheridge House, where he has been a resident for nine years; and the Margaret Carter Sunday School class.
The family requests memorials be made to First Methodist Church or the donor’s choice.
Roy was born on July 17, 1923, son of the late Roy Cecil Wehman and the late Martha McAlister Wehman. He married Vera Harpole Wehman on Nov. 13, 1960. She preceded him in death on April 27, 2008.
He was a 1941 graduate of Union City High School and a 1949 graduate of the University of Tennessee's College of Engineering. He was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority for 33 years as an electrical test engineer and later worked for Dyersburg Electric System as a professional engineer.
During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp in the European Theater and was awarded the Air medal with Oakleaf Clusters. While a member of the 464th Bomb Group in Italy, his plane was damaged by hostile fire over Vienna. He parachuted into German held territory, was captured and was held as a prisoner of war in Stalag VII-A in Moosburg, Germany, until the war’s end.
He was a lifelong member of Union City First United Methodist Church, where he served as administrative board chairman and on the board of trustees. He is a former teacher of the Margaret Carter Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, First Families of Tennessee, the Obion County Historical Society and the American Legion and was a former Boy Scout Leader of Troop No. 52.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws, Martha (Wehman) and Bill Townes of Union City and Nell (Wehman) and Dan Smith of Newbern; four grandchildren and the spouse of one, Hunter Smith of Spring Hill, Will and Nealey Townes and Katherine Townes, all of Union City, and Cary Smith of Memphis.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Phil Wehman.
