He married Mary A. Brown January 7, 1850, in Marietta, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Anna M. (b. @1856) and William (b. @1858). In 1860, he was an inn keeper living with his family in Marietta but later worked as a plasterer and laborer. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes. He is in the 1860 census as "Johnstin."

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Marietta August 5. 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 135th Pennsylvania Infantry, and commissioned a 2nd lieutenant to date August 14. He honorably discharged with his company May 24, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Lancaster August 24, 1864, mustered into federal service allegedly that same day in Philadelphia as a private with Co. K 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry, but on September 22 was promoted to 2nd lieutenant and transferred to Co. K, 199th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was promoted "in the field" December 14 to 1st lieutenant although the Record and Pension Office later stated, "He is considered by this Dept. [Record and Pensions Office] as commissioned to the grade of 1st Lt. to take effect from Nov 28/64." He honorably discharged "before Richmond" by special order to date June 7, 1865. He is on the company registers of both the 203rd and 199th Pa as "Johnson."

He and Mary divorced December 16, 1875, and he married Florida Black, née Keyser, widow of Samuel Black, May 13, 1877, in York Borough, York County. Mary applied for a widow's pension but was denied due to the divorce.
