In the 1940's Bill was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was shot down over France and was hid for several years by the French underground. He played deaf and dumb. His mustache and coloring allowed him to pass as French. He was reported missing and came home after the war. His wife was of Polish decent and she lived with Herman and Bertha in an apartment upstairs of Bertha's home.
