Information from James and Mae Crawford, July 16, 1999, Hettie Smith was my Mother. She greatly disliked for her name to be spelled 'May.' Her name was Hettie Mae Tallant and she married Buck Hodges about 1925. They had one daughter, Helen Marie Hodges. Hettie divorced and later married Henry Smith, having 3 children by him: George Thomas Smith, (b. 27 Jul 1934, d. 26 Aug 1939); Hettie Mae (me) born 19 Mar 1936 and Richard Henry Smith b. 26 Sep 1946 (my youngest brother). Henry Smith died in Nov 1949. Hettie married a third time to Emmitt Martin in 1959. He died 3 Jun 1963 and was buried in Red Oak cemetery east of Blossom on F.M. 1502. Later she married her fourth husband, Hilbert Luther about 1964 or 65. He died around 1975. My father, George Henry Smith, was born 29 Feb 1880. His mother was half-Cherokee, but never registered. His father died when Henry Smith was 4 years old and his Mother moved to Denison, Grayson Co. Texas.

She was born 14 Jul 1909 in Montgomery County, Arkansas, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Tallant and Ollie Lula Huggins Tallant . Hettie married first to Virgil Dewey Hodges on 21 Dec 1924, they divorced. She married second to George Henry Smith on 8 Feb 1933 in Hugo, Choctow County, Oklahoma. She married third to Emmitt Martin in 1959, and her fourth husband was Hilbert Luther. Her children were: 1. Helen Marie Hodges, Hettie Mae Smith, George Thomas Smith, and Richard Henry Smith.

Her obituary stated - Mrs Hettie Mae Smith Luther, of Parkview Nursing Home, formerly of Reno, died this morning at 4:25 a.m. in L. P. McCuistion Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday in Steele and Thomas Memorial Chapel with interment to follow in Hopewell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 p. m. to 8 p. m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Mrs. Luther was born 14 July 1904 in Glenwood, Montgomery County, Arkansas. the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Ollie Lula Huggins Tallant. She married Henry Smith in 1933 in Hugo, OK. He preceded her in death on 7 Nov 1949. Mrs. Luther was a Baptist.

She is survived by one son, Richard Smith; one step-son, Melvin Smith; two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Samuel, and Mrs. James Crawford; two stepdaughters, Mrs. E. D. Moyer and Mrs. Ivan Mazy; three brothers Wendell Tallant, Duane Tallant, and Burton Tallant; five sisters, Mrs. Rex Dicken, Mrs. Earl Waters, Mrs. Otha Smith, Mrs. Glyn Hale and Mrs. John Boren; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, George Thomas Smith, in 1939.
