Ira was born 19 May 1763, son of Ezra and Hannah Bigelow (Connecticut Town Records). He married Rachel Allen on 10 June 1784 (Early Connecticut records)

Ira served in the American Revolution, in Connecticut. His service records are indexed under the spelling Biggalo. He served under Capt Simeon Allyn, on 26 Feb 1781.

In 1790, he was living in New London County, Connecticut, with one male under 16 and two females. The children were presumably son, Calvin, and daughter, Aurelia.

In 1800, Ira was living in Colchester, New London County, Connecticut with 3 males under 10 (Julius, John, and Samuel), 2 males 10-15 (sons,Calvin and Ira), one male 26-44 (himself), 2 females under 10 (Mary and Lois), 1 female 10-15 (Aurelia), and one female over 45 (possibly his mother-in-law, Mrs. Allen, as his mother was deceased by this time).

On 6 September 1805, his father, Ezra Bigelow, was grantee of 203 acres of land, located in the Town of Geneseo, Ontario County, by James Wadsworth, grantor. (Ontario deeds, Vol 10, page 616)

By 1808, Ira was living in Geneseo, then Ontario County, New York. He obtained 40 acres of land, per Ontario County probate records from his father, Ezra.

The town of Geneseo was established in 1789, prior to the formation of Livingston County. Livingston County wasn't created until 1821, when portions of Ontario County became part of Livingston County.

Per the 1810 census, Geneseo, Ontario County, New York, Ira was living with his wife, both over 45, one male under 10 (Roderick), one male 10 thru 15, two males 16 thru 25, two females 10 thru 15, and one female 16 thru 25.

After the death of his first wife, Ira married 2nd Elizabeth Mosier or Mosher, on 15 April 1815, Livonia, New York, per a newspaper account. It was the second marriage for both. Ira and Elizabeth had two children.

On the 1820 census, Ira and Elizabeth were living in Livonia, Ontario, New York, engaged in agriculture. There were one male under 10, presumed son, Ira, one male 16 thru 25, one male 26 thru 44, male over 45 (Ira), 2 females under 10, one their daughters, Rachel, 2 females 10 thru 15, one female 16 thru 25, and one female over 45 (Elizabeth).
