Stella A. Nelson Carlson died May 29, 2002, in Minneapolis at the age of 92. Stella was born Nov. 27, 1909, in Rockford, the daughter of Anna and Herman Nelson. She married the Rev. Frank J. Carlson on Nov. 16, 1932; he preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 1978. Stella celebrated a full, rich life of loving, caring and ministry which continued into her last days. In her long years of life and ministry, she touched many people with her gifts of leadership, nurturing, mentoring and encouragement in faith, service and witness. She was very active in leadership, education of Bible study with women's groups at local, regional and synodical levels. She is remembered by many for her numerous ministry at the piano and organ as well as participating in and leading vocal groups and choirs. Stella and Frank shared a unique partnership in all aspects of parish ministry, particularly in meaningful worship services in all the congregations they served in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Survivors include sons, the Rev. David F. Carlson, Dr. Daniel F. Carlson; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Ruth Benander. Also predeceased by two brothers; three sisters; a daughter who died at birth; and son, Donald, who died four days before her death.
