Herbert "Herbie" E. Beal Jr., age 84, of Roseburg, OR, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017, peacefully with his family by his side.

Herbie was born October 21, 1932, to Herbert E. Beal Sr. and Nola Louise Baumgartner in Wichita, KS. He was the third of four children from this marriage, his parents later divorced and he had two half- brothers.

He started working at a very young age washing dishes and was very good in school. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in Hutchinson, KS, in June of 1950. He married Celia Mae Johnson on December 23, 1950, in their hometown of "Hutch."

Herb, or as his siblings and family called him "Sonny", enlisted in the US Air Force in November of 1952, for four years. His basic training was taken at Parks Air Force Base in California. Upon completion of basic training, he was sent to Keesler Air Force Base, in Mississippi, for training in the radio field. He then went to Bartlesville Air Force Station in Bartlesville, OK, as part of the 796th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron in August 1953. Airman Beal then went to Minneapolis, MN, for six months where they gathered the 81st Squadron sending them to Fairbanks, AK, Ladd Air Force Base, for two and a half years finally discharging in 1956. The stories and adventures during these four years were told often as Herb and Celia loved their time together while he was in the military.

His next step was enrolling in college in Lakeland, FL, using his GI money. Herb graduated in 1960, from Ft. Hayes State College Hayes, KS, despite getting a "D" in golf! He earned his BS in Business and he worked as an Assistant Manager/Manager for F.W. Woolworth from 1961 to 1971. This career took him and Celia and daughter Karen, who was born in July of 1961, in El Dorado, KS, to three states, Kansas, Illinois, and Oklahoma.

In 1971, Herb moved his family to Roseburg, OR. He started his third career with Roseburg Lumber and retired in 1993, from Roseburg Forest Products.

Retirement gave Herb and Celia the opportunity to travel. Their greatest joy was spending January through March or later, in their desert 2nd home of Palm Springs, CA, for over 20 years. While there, the desert provided many long lasting lovely friendships and memories. Family and friends visited them in Palm Springs where Herb was the self-appointed "Pool Man." His grandchildren loved their visits to PS, and Herb was even told once he looked like Bob Hope, and he loved that! Herb and Celia's lives were very full and he loved his family.

Herb is survived by his loving wife of, 66 years, Celia of Roseburg, OR; his daughter, Karen (Alan) Burns; granddaughter, Kourtney Burns, and her son, Clayton Kent, all of Florence, OR; grandson, Kenton Beal (Olivia) Burns of Beaverton, OR; his sister, Beverly LaClair; brother, Harlan (Judy) Beal all of Hutchinson, KS; and half-brother, Phil (Timi) Schrader of Kansas City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, George Schrader; stepmother, Hattie Mae Beal; a sister, Betty Burnett; and a half-brother, Eddie Daryl Beal.

Private cremational rites were held with Burns's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home and Siuslaw Valley Crematory in charge of all arrangements. Herb will be inurned at Roseburg National Cemetery in Roseburg, OR, at a later date with private family services.
