Murder Victim. Nicholas was the son of Jeff and Susan Markowitz and brother to Ben Markowitz. He was kidnapped by Jesse James Hollywood to force Ben to settle a debt, but when Jesse discovered how much trouble he would be in if he let Nick leave freely, he had three of his friends and drugmates, Ryan Hoyt, Jesse Rugge and Graham Presley, take Nick up to the California Mountains and shoot him to death. Two hikers found Nick's body the next morning, buried in a shallow grave. In the two days that Nick was missing, 39 witnesses saw him with numerous teenagers and no one called police even though his disappearance was all over the local news. Nick was treated as a guest by his captors and was under the impression that once his brother paid his debt he would be set free. Nine of the participants in the murder were sentenced to nine years to life in prison. Jesse James Hollywood would then flee the country and elude police for five years before he was arrested in Paraguay. Hollywood was tried and sentenced to death. Nick's story was featured on television's "Unsolved Mysteries" and "America's Most Wanted" where Jesse Hollywood was on the FBI's "Ten Most Wanted List" for almost five years. In January 2007, the movie, "Alpha Dog," based on the events of Nick's murder was released.
