He was the son of William R. Stevens and Harriet H. (Taylor) Stevens, the eighth of their nine children. Elwood was about 8 years old when the family moved to Trenton, NJ. He married on July 24, 1895 , Sarah Anne "Annie" Mellor, the daughter of John E. Mellor and Sarah A. (Pass) Mellor. Elwood and Sarah had five children:

FATALLY STRICKEN AT SCAMMELL PLANT
Elwood Stevens, 62, of 233 Beechwood Avenue was fatally stricken with a heart condition while working at the Scammell China Company plant early this afternoon. He was dead upon the arrival of a physician. Coroner Elmer A. Kemp viewed the body and issued a burial permit. Stevens is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah A. Stevens.

Funeral services for Elwood Stevens, 59 years old, who was fatally stricken yesterday at the Scammell China Company , will be held Thursady afternoon at 3 o'clock from his home, 233 Beechwood Avenue. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Poulson & Van Hise. Mr. Stevens is survived by his widow, Sarah; a daughter Mrs. Richard Brooks; four sons, Harry, John, William , and James; a sister Mrs. Frank Jones of Imlaystown; a brother , Edward Stevens of Leesburg, Florida. He was a member of Trenton Lodge No 5., F & A.M., and Mercer Castle,No. 23, K.G.E.
