He was breveted Colonel, United States Volunteers, for faithful and meritorious service March 13, 1865. Lieutenant Colonel Whipple was discharged, with battalion, at Fort Humboldt July 14, 1865. Stephen G. Whipple is buried in the one-acre plot, now the present-day Grand Army of the Republic Section, Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery, that he had purchased for the benefit of members of his former command.
A Government headstone, manufactured under a contract dated July 11, 1899, has been placed over the grave site of “G. Whipple” at Mount Hope Cemetery, San Diego, San Diego County, California. Mount Hope Cemetery records show that this “G. Whipple” was a native of Rhode Island and was age 40 years at his demise August 30,1887.
The headstone installed at Mount Hope Cemetery and the headstone installed at Myrtle Grove Memorial Cemetery for Stephen G. Whipple have different designs indicating that they were applied for and manufactured at different times.
They Pass Away. Eureka, Oct. 21.-Col. S. G. Whipple, a prominent pioneer of Northern California, died at his residence in this city this afternoon of stomach troubles. He was colonel of volunteers during the early Indian troubles, and later captain in the regular army. He was a member of the legislature from 1853 to 1856. (Los Angeles Herald, 22 October 1895, 2:7)

Georgie [sic, Georgia] E. Whipple, age 52, widow of Stephen G. Whipple and a Landlady, was enumerated June 2, 1900, at Eureka with Sophia L. Whipple 27, and Allen [sic] Whipple 14 [sic]. Allen Whipple 14 was recorded in error and should have been Stephen Whipple 11. The enumeration shows that Georgia was the mother of three children, all of whom were then living. Sophia Lucretia Lord-Whipple was a daughter by her first husband, Herbert Lord, whereas Elmer Judson Whipple and Stephen Carson Whipple were sons by her second husband, Stephen Girard Whipple.
