Virgil was know by many as Sonny. Sonny was the 2nd youngest of 10 children born to John & Mittie Allen. Sonny was born in the backseat of a car between Arkansas and Oklahoma.. When he was very young his family moved to California. Sonny attended school in California and met the love of his life (Betty) there. Sonny & Betty were married in 1960 and had 5 children.
Sonny was a self taught man. He taught himself carpentry, auto mechanics and autobody repair. Sonny was very creative. He had an amazing deep voice and could sing. Sonny was an excellent painter both on canvas and cars. There was nothing Sonny could not do and do it super fantastically.
Sonny worked as a automechanic and autobody repairman to provide for his family. He worked for Walsh's Autobody Shop for many many year. Then started his own autobody shop. I watch him build a big enclosed trailer from scatch, no instructions or plans. Sonny also customized many vehicles over the years. Sonny build a "kit car" for a customer once. He had gutted a an old passenger van. With no instructions or diagrams, Sonny redid the inside with mood lights, full size bed, fireplace, 4 captain chairs and a table, and included storage areas. On the outside of the van, Sonny had "flarred out the fenders", painted it a 2 tone color then had painted a "hillibilly scene " on the side of the van.. It truly was one of a kind.
Sonny and Betty moved their young family to Benton Harbor, Michigan in 1968. Then in 1981 they moved their family to the Fort Smith, Arkansas area. Sonny & Betty lived in Arkansas for the next 36 years until their deaths.
Sonny was a kind caring loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He will be deeply missed :-(
