Florece Marcelle Aiken was born Florence Marcelle Brackney in 1917 in Bellefontaine, Ohio, to George Ora Brackney and Jeannette Hazel Brackney (nee Funk) and died at age 99 in Sunnyvale, California, on May 11, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Thomas Edward Aiken (1987) and her three brothers: a stillborn “Baby Boy Brackney” (1910); her “brainy” older brother, Donald Brackney (1985), and, her talented and fun-loving younger brother, Lawton Brackney (2004). She is survived by the family she loved so much: her son, Al (Deb) Aiken, of Redding, CA; her daughter, Janet (Gene) Elliott, of Santa Clara, CA; her grandson, Mike Aiken of Gilroy, CA; her former daughter-in-law, Claudia Aiken of Campbell, CA; her two remaining cousins, who were part of the group of first and second cousins with whom Marcelle grew up and who held fun-filled reunions throughout Marcelle’s life: Jeanne (Jim) Bennett of Springfield, OH and Helen Johnson of Palm Bay, FL; as well as her beloved extended family in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

In lieu of services for Marcelle, the family asks that you enjoy a visit to any of our beautiful State or County parks or any place where you find peace so that you can take a few minutes to remember, honor and give thanks for all your friends and loved ones now passed, as well as those still, fortunately, present in your lives. A private family memorial will be held at a date to be determined later.
If you wish to make a donation in Marcelle’s memory, the family recommends Marcelle’s favorite charities: The Salvation Army, Second Harvest Food Bank, the American Cancer Society, the Sempervirens Fund at Big Basin Redwoods State Park or any charity of your choice.

Marcelle’s family is very grateful to the many dedicated and loving caregivers, nurses and staff (too many to name but all of whom became like family and are extended heartfelt thanks) who befriended Marcelle and cared for her with love over her nearly eight years at Sunrise Assisted Living in Sunnyvale. Special thanks go to Firdowsa Ibrahim, who was a loving caregiver and friend to Marcelle for nearly her entire stay at Sunrise. The family also extends its heartfelt thanks to all the members of Vitas Hospice’s care team with special thanks to Lillian Hill for her nearly three years of exceptionally generous loving care and assistance. Thank you, also, to the Sunrise administrators for allowing Marcelle to stay in her “home” until the day of her death and to the members of the Pathways Hospice care team for the care and assistance they provided.
