Boedecker Family History == John Henry "J. H." Boedecker -- 05 March 1852 to 06 August 1943

Boedecker Family History
Great Grandpa John Henry Boedecker was orphaned at the age of
9 and placed in a Catholic boy's school. His father operated 2
large wholesale grocers. One in Cincinnati and one across the river in Covington, [Kenton], Kentucky, United States. Supposedly, the Uncle that put John Henry in the boy's school was a Riverboat Captain. John Henry was schooled in engineering and he also. studied for the priesthood.
Just before he was to be ordained he went over the wall and ran off to join the railroad. J.H. worked for the Great Northern Railroad as the Superintendent of buildings and bridges and the Union Pacific as foreman and undertaker. He worked the railroad from Chicago into Mexico. He stayed in Mexico, to mine, for gold. After Mexico became turbulent he went to Grass Valley, by stagecoach, to mine for gold. While mining for gold, in Grass Valley, he was shot, in the side, by an arrow. The account of it was written up in the local paper and our Great grandmother Lulu Bremer read about him and said "that name just suits me, I'm going to have him." They met shortly afterward. They were married in 1888. They lived in San Francisco, Menlo Park, Santa Cruz, Utah, Sacramento, Chico, Yuba City, Manton, Marysville, Eureka, Red Bluff, Redding, Sterling City, Coming, Biggs, Santa Clarita, and Cottage Grove, Oregon, before moving to Etna. Lulu loved to sing. While living in San Francisco, she would take any opportunity to do so, in front of an audience, whether ladies were supposed to or not! During one of the family trips with J .H. by covered wagon Lulu stopped a train and made them give her water for her family as they had run out.
When Great Aunt Norma was two years old John Henry moved his family to his mining property on Coffee Creek in Trinity County.
They traveled 17 Miles on horseback with Aunt Norma sitting on a pillow in front of her mother. Her father, after a Winter slide had discovered a hillside showing gold flakes and wheat kernel sized nuggets. He spent two years building trails putting up storage and tool sheds, crew cabins, a large log cabin for his family and a powder house. In the Spring of the opening season, John Henry took two mules, a loaf of bread, some bacon and coffee and went over the mountain to Callahan to get the crew and supplies.
(Which included flour from Ft. Jones Four Mill which cost 50 cents for 50 lbs) A late snow storm moved in laying down 3 feet of new snow. J .H. had to let the mules loose and turn back for home.
After his very hard trip back he returned home to find his $30,000 dollar investment in ashes and his wife and children crouched in a stream bottom. The snow had raised slivers all over the rough-hewn shingles. Sparks from the fireplace started a fire and it quickly spread to the other buildings making it impossible to save anything. Lulu gathered the children into the stream to save them from the fire and the explosions caused by the dynamite. John Henry, realizing that it was 17 miles to the nearest shelter on Willow Creek cut the bottom comers from his knapsack and put Great Aunt Norma's legs through and then cut slots in the top to put his arms through and he carried her that way all during their long trip through the snow. Lulu had to urge Frank, 10, and Lee, 6, on with a switch to keep them from freezing! J .H. studied for the priesthood, was a civil engineer, foreman for the railroad, superintendent of bridges and buildings, undertaker, oversaw the building of Senator Stanford's son's tomb, was a blacksmith, carpenter, miner, furniture builder, owned a furniture store, was a barge operator on the Mississippi, sold real estate, made mattresses, built sawmills, put in roads and transformers, sold insurance, was a housing contractor, brought a water system into Etna and owned a funeral parlor! J.H. and his son Frank also helped bring in electricity and phones to Etna. Frank was quite an
inventor. He built a washing machine before anyone else had one.
People used to go to his home to watch it! He never filed a patent.
Those kind of things were not important to him. He also invented a revolving Christmas tree stand during WWII that had red, white and blue lights. He put a phone up between Grandma Florence's house and Aunt Norma's house. No one else had phones at the time

Boedecker Family History == John Henry "J. H." Boedecker -- 05 March 1852 to 06 August 1943
