HANEY, PEARL SHAPIRO 1925-2015

Passed away peacefully in Miami, FL. November 27 2015

Pearl was born in Chicago, IL and was preceded in death by her parents Bessie and Aaron Harry Shapiro and her sisters Sarah, Frieda and Miriam and her closest friends , Blossom Abrams and later Anne Smith of Chicago and her dearest cousins Esther Talley and Shirley Ravitch of Miami.

In her younger days she worked at the Yeshiva in Chicago with her sister Esther. In 1945, she married the late Leo A. Haney who was a Naval Medical Corpsman at the time. They traveled to Post WWII Japan in 1948 and then returned to start their family in Bethesda, MD .

Devastated by her separation and later divorced in 1957, but still strongly determined to build a new life, Pearl moved her children back to Chicago to be near her family again.

She worked for many years at the 5th Army Headquarters in Hyde Park. Always active in her children's lives, she volunteered extensively at the Young Men's Jewish Center and the South Side Hebrew Congregation on Chicago's South side to be closer involved with her growing children. She later worked at the American Bar Association, Illinois Children's Home and Aid Society on Dearborn Street and the former  VA Hospital of Chicago; Downtown.

Retired in 1983, she lived in Vero Beach, Pembroke Pines and Miami, FL. A frequent Pink Lady and Volunteer, she often volunteered at local hospitals and libraries, regularly returning to the Midwest to see her daughters.

Pearl was survived by her sister Esther Porath of Jerusalem, Israel and her three children: Arlene Mallek of Crown Point, IN - Nadene Rastall of Saugatuck, MI and William (Bill) Haney of Pembroke Pines , FL - and honored in life by their loved ones: Ronnie, Daniel, Eric, Ed, Rose and Roberta, and Tony and Keith.

Beloved Grandmother to Kevin and Peggy, Christopher, Daniel Paul and Lenore, Anthony and Karan, Erin and Ryan. Great-grandmother to Michael and Jennifer, Jenny and Josh, Matthew, Morgan, Sophie , Christina, Michael, Jack, Johnathan, Jaguar, Tyger , TJ and Amber and Cynthia. Great-Great- Grandmother to Dean as well as Kaylle, Leo, Nate and Sebastian.

Her unique and inimitable style and wonderful spirit - along with a steadfast determination for living - touched all that experienced knowing and loving Pearl. She used her maiden name as her legal middle name all her adult life, out of respect for and recognition of her parents.

A private farewell only for members of Pearl's immediate South Florida family was held at Star of David Memorial Funeral Chapel at 7801 Bailey Road, North Lauderdale, FL 33068 (954-722-9000) on Sunday December 6, 2015

Pearl was transported home to Chicago for funeral arrangements handled by Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home , 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette, IL 60091 (877-256-5700).

Graveside Services/Burial was held promptly at 1pm Wednesday, December 9th, 2015 at Jewish Waldheim Cemetery's Dvinsker/Dwinsker Cemetery.
