Lonson Perry Hammond, farmer of Bloomfield Township, Logan County, Ohio is a native son of Clark County, Ohio. His parents were Nathan Hammond and Submit Munson Hammond who were pioneer settlers of the state of Ohio. Nathan was a cabinet maker and farmer by trade.

On the 6th of February 1851 Lonson Perry was married in Shelby county, Ohio to Elizabeth Johnson born November 6, 1824. Their children were William Madison born August 9, 1853, Charles Nathan born April 1, 1859, Jesse Elmer born August 28, 1867. Lonson Perry joined with Company H, 139th OVI during the Civil War. The regiment was assigned to do guard duty in Petersburg, on the Appomattox river.

In his political views Lonson Perry was a Whig and took an active part in the log cabin campaign of 1840. He cast his first vote for Henry Clay in 1844 and in 1856 voted for Fremont, the first Republican party candidate.
