William E. "Bill" Corder, of Junior went to his heavenly home on April 25, 2017 while at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 3 1927 in Century, WV son of the late Donald and Hazel Corder.
He is survived by his wife Violet (Proudfoot) Corder. They were married June 10, 1949.
He is also survived by daughter Linda Coleman and her husband Chuck of Belington and a son William D. Corder and his wife Julia of Junior;.two grandsons Doug Coleman, Eric Corder. Three great-grandchildren, Jacob Coleman, Sarah Coleman and Kaleb Corder. Also surviving is his beloved dog Peppi. A grandson, Matthew Corder preceded him in death.
Bill graduated from Belington High School in 1948 after serving in the United States Army in WW2 in the Philippines. He was a Life member of VFW Post 410 and was a Member of American Legion Post 96. He had attended Calvary United Methodist church in Junior and was a member of The Methodist Men. He was a Christian by faith.
Bill worked 17 years in the coal mines, then worked at the Western Maryland Railroad shops in Elkins. He retired from teaching from the Philip Barbour Vocational Center. He loved the outdoors, camping, fishing and hunting, and still participated in the annual deer hunt into his 80's. He loved to read Westerns
As a youth he loved athletics playing; football, basketball and baseball. He also played fast pitch softball into his mid 40's. Bill also played in the Mountain State Baseball league. He volunteered as a youth baseball coach for over 30 years coaching T-ball thru American Legion Baseball. Bill and Jack Reed coached one of the few teams from Barbour County to go the Little League State Championships. He also served as President of Belington Little League and helped start a Babe Ruth league in Barbour County. He was a charter member of the Junior Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a charter member of the Junior Lions Club and was a past President. He served two terms as Mayor of the town of Junior and served many years on Town Council. Bill also served two terms on the Barbour County Board of Education. He served on the Barbour County Housing Authority, the Barbour County Emergency Authority and was a past president of the Belington Senior Center.
Friends may call the Schoonover – Stemple Funeral Chapel beginning at 5:00 P.M. on Thursday, May 4. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 7:00 P.M. with the Rev. Johnny Williams officiating.
On Friday, May 5th American Legion Post 96 will be in charge of the Military rites at the inurnment at the Knights of Pythias Mountain View Cemetery at 11:00am.
