Arliss Levine Hape
November 12, 1925 - April 10, 2017

Arliss "Al" Hape passed away peacefully on April 10 in San Jose surrounded by family.

Arliss was born and raised in Westminster, Maryland.

In 1944 he enlisted in the Navy serving in the Asiatic-Pacific route in the Naval Air Transport Service (NATS) based in Honolulu, HI.

It was after leaving the military in 1946 that he met his wife, Betty Hape (Hopping) of Los Gatos and remained wedded for almost 49 years until her passing in 1995.

He worked for the Standard Oil Company (now known as Chevron) as an owner and operator of a service station in downtown Los Gatos for many years. He and Betty owned and operated one of the first Round Table Pizza franchises in Los Gatos for 20 years until they retired in 1980.

Arliss enjoyed playing golf and was an avid bowler who played in bowling leagues at Cambrian Bowl in the 60s and 70s. He enjoyed watching the SF Giants and was a 49ers season ticket holder since the days of Candlestick. He and Betty loved vacationing in Kona, Hawaii, and were regulars on the Mississippi Queen steamboat cruises. Arliss was well-known as "Captain" at the assisted living center where he lived. He would stop and greet each person with a big smile and a salute. His warm personality, enjoyment of life, and love of people will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. At the end of his days, he felt satisfied that "he had done it all, seen it all, and was proud of how his life turned out."

He is survived by his children Gary Hape of Discovery Bay, Kathleen West of Grass Valley, and Susan Filla of San Jose. He has one grandchild, Andrea Scarboro of Mountain View.

Arrangements under the direction of Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park, San Jose, CA.
