Son of Joseph Lavecchia and Gilda Sabatini Lavecchia Perry.
Beloved teacher and benefactor of Christian Brothers High School. The street in front of the school is named in his memory.
John was a native Memphian and a graduate in the Class of 1955 of Christian Brothers High School. He completed his undergraduate degree at Siena College and began his teaching career at St. Louis grammar school. Brother Adrian prevailed on him to come back to his alma mater in 1967 where he began a 30-year teaching career with the Brothers. John was rated by his students "one of the best teachers" at CBHS, was also a drama director and moderated the school paper – the Maurelian. John spent his entire adult life and career as a teacher, thirty of those years at CBHS. He fully embraced the Lasallian philosophy of the Brothers and the school. John retired in 1997 and in the spirit of his devotion to the Christian Brothers he was recommended by the Brothers of Memphis, Tennessee, for entrance into the Institute through a Diploma of Affiliation. The Diploma was granted by the Superior General, Brother John Johnston, a fellow CBHS alum, on October 29, 2000. John died on May 11, 2001, and never having married, donated his entire estate to Christian Brothers High School to help further the education of the young men there. The "Lavecchia Wing" of the school is dedicated to John and appropriately it contains eight "teaching classrooms." A portion of Walnut Grove Road on which his high school sits has been named in memory of John – "Lavecchia Avenue." He died at age 64 and is buried next to his mother Gilda Sabatini Lavecchia Perry (1899-1996) in Calvary Cemetery in Memphis.
