Born at home on October 4, 1925, in Emlenton, Pa. Lula was the first daughter and sixth child of what eventually became 9 siblings born to Marie and Gerald Carr.

Lula spent her childhood in PA and after attending nursing college in Erie she took a job at Wyandotte Hospital while she waited for her opportunity to transfer to Hawaii where she had always wanted to be.

However, life sometimes doesn't go exactly as planned, as she met her future husband Walter W. Burton while working in Wyandotte. Lula was nothing if not direct (blunt) . She first got a call from Walt asking for a date and after a short conversation she hung up on him saying, "When you stop being a smart ass, maybe you can call me back." Apparently that worked, as they married in 1949 and then in quick succession came their four children Patty, Mike, Cathy, and Jon.

They moved to Riverview on Koester Street in 1954 and never looked back raising their family and living life to the fullest while Lula worked at Riverside Osteopathic Hospital as an operating room nurse and Walt worked at Mclouth Steel. Mrs. Burton to the neighborhood kids, Burt to her nursing friends, or Lu to everyone else she was well known and loved by many

The family continued to grow as their children married: Cathy to Doug Booker, Patty to Bob Meaney, Mike and Cynda Burton, and Jon and Maureen Burton. Those marriages produced 7 grandchildren: Doug and Nick Booker, Michael T & Robbie Meaney, Samantha & Sean Burton, and Daniel Burton.

Unfortunately Walt passed away in 1983 leaving Lula alone to dote on her grandchildren.

Lula maintained a good house and kept herself busy with reading, watching sports or her joy at visiting the salon on Friday's to get her hair done.

Octobers always brought everyone together for her birthday and usually around this time came the annual pie baking event attended by Patty & Cathy with daughters-in-law, Mary and Olivia, and many of their friends producing up to 60 apple pies at a time. Even when Lu was physically unable to participate she kept a watchful eye on the proceedings and woe be it to anyone who fussed with the pie crust, or didn't turn the edge "just so." Measurements were a handful or a pinch or a dash but every move was strictly choreographed.

Ultimately great-grandchildren began to arrive, much to Lula's delight. The current count is six great-grandchildren including Nick and Mary's Noah & Will, Doug and Olivia's Ripley & Madison, Samantha and Javier's Benicio, and Robbie & Marcie's Ava... and still growing.

Arthritis and a litany of mobility issues increased over the years, but she fought her physical challenges with strength, dignity, and determination. Never complaining or feeling sorry for herself but always interested in what everyone was doing both her family and those who knew her.

"Grandma Lu" maintained her wry sense of humor and keen intellect to the end. With an incredible memory of people, places, and events, it was her physical body that finally failed her and Lula passed peacefully on April 11, 2017

She is survived by her family, her sister Kay, brother Dick, and in-laws Syd and Barbara Burton.

As family we feel particularly blessed to have had the good fortune to be part of her life and to those that knew her we wish for you to celebrate a long and well lived life.
