Jimmy was featured in the ABC News Close-Up documentary "Can't it be Anyone Else" as a child battling leukemia. The documentary was aired in July of 1980 and featured other children, also battling the disease.

Jimmy is survived by his parents C.W. and Isabelle Bird, a sister, Marianne Bird, two brothers, Chuck and Steve Bird, as well as an aunt, D.W. Wheeler, and numerous aunts and uncles residing in Canada.
