G. Shelby "Buddy" Friedrichs Jr.: FRIEDRICHS, SAILING MEDALIST AND N.O. BROKER, DIES AT 51

G. Shelby "Buddy" Friedrichs Jr., a New Orleans investment broker who won an Olympic gold medal in sailing in 1968, died Wednesday of a heart attack at East Jefferson General Hospital. He was 51.

Mr. Friedrichs, who started sailing at age 10, began dreaming of competing in the Olympic Games after winning the 1964 Southern Yacht Club competition.

Besides winning the Olympic gold medal in the Dragon Class competition on Acapulco Bay, he was North American champion from 1965 to 1967, Canadian champion in 1965, European champion in 1966 and world champion in 1967, winning the King Constantine Trophy in Dragon competition at Toronto.

After his Olympic triumph, Mr. Friedrichs won his fourth North American Dragon championship in 1970.

Mr. Friedrichs, who sailed while attending Tulane University, also won the national championship in the L-16 Class and the International Star Class North American championship, as well as the 1964 Clifford Mallory Championship, given annually to the top sailor in the United States.

After the Olympics, he remained active in sailing, but mostly participated in local and regional races. He also raised money for the Olympic Sailing Association of the Southern Yacht Club, the United States Olympic Committee and the Tulane Green Wave Athletic Club.

Mr. Friedrichs, who was born in New Orleans, graduated from Metairie Park Country Day School and Tulane University.

He was a senior vice president and investment broker with Howard, Weil, Labouisse, Friedrichs Inc., the New Orleans-based firm his father founded.

He was a member of the Southern and New York yacht clubs, the Recess Club and the Tulane T Club for students who won athletic letters.

He was on the boards of the Green Wave Club and the Olympic Sailing Association of the Southern Yacht Club, and he was elected to the Tulane Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife, Claire Cofer Friedrichs; two daughters, Suzanne and Adair Friedrichs; a son, G. Shelby Friedrichs III; two stepsons, Robert and Miller Richmond; a brother, Joseph Maybin Gore Friedrichs; and a sister, Virginia Friedrichs Burke.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. Burial will be in Metairie Cemetery.
