At approximately 7:07 on the morning of April 7, 2017, the Hazard Police Department received a call reporting that there was an elderly man lying on the side of the road near the entrance of East Perry Elementary School and that he appeared to be deceased. Shortly after our officers arrived on scene, they noticed a vehicle stuck in mud approximately 175 yards away. Officers recognized the vehicle as possibly being connected to a person that had been reported missing from Knott County to Kentucky State Police on the night of April 6th. Detectives were called to the scene to conduct a death investigation.
Through investigation, it was determined that 89 year old Bobby Combs of Fisty was reported missing to Kentucky State Police during the late hours of April 6th after failing to pick up a family member from a restaurant in Hazard. At this point, it appears that Combs possibly became disoriented and drove off of the pavement in a construction area. His car became stuck in the mud and it appears that Combs left the vehicle and attempted to walk toward Highway 80. Evidence at the scene suggests that Combs tripped over a rock and fell, possibly striking the curb with his head. No foul play is suspected. Official cause of death was later listed as Heart attack.
