SOUTH BEND - S. Dannie Carper, 80, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at Hospice House of Elkhart on Friday, March 24, 2017, with family at his bedside. He was born on February 23, 1937, in Anderson IN to Silas and Ruth (Myers) Carper. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Donald E., Ronald G., Jerry L., and Michael D. Carper.

After graduating from Anderson High School, in 1955, Dannie married the former Marilyn June Birch on August 28, 1955. Surviving family members include his wife June, and their children, Cathy (& Erv) Ciesialka, of Syracuse, IN, Joe (& Bobbi) Carper of Mishawaka, IN; two grandchildren Chelsea Mathews of Carmel, IN, and Tori Carper of Bloomington, IN; two sisters, Carolyn (& Carl) Braden, of Mason, OH, Phyllis Huff, of Anderson, IN, and one brother, Earl (& Joretta) Carper of Manning, SC, and many nieces, nephews, and stepgrandchildren.

While living in Anderson, Dannie began working for Indiana Bell Telephone Company. Being a telephone lineman was one of his proudest career moments. Then in 1969, he received a promotion and moved his family to South Bend where he enjoyed many years as a Cable Repair Supervisor. After retiring in 1992, Dannie and his wife June started their own antique business, and eventually opened their own store, Si's Son Dannie's Antiques, located in Nappanee, IN.

Dannie was an avid golfer and a die-hard fan of the Chicago Bears. While working for Indiana Bell, he was involved in the Telephone Pioneers of America, and was a dependable blood donor, donating over 500 times, many of which when he was dressed as Santa Claus. His nieces and nephews can still recall Uncle Dannie playing Santa at holiday gatherings.

Not many things made him happier than returning to Anderson and spending time at his parents' house playing lawn jarts, euchre, or Santa. If there was a joke, he told it. If there was something he thought was funny in the comics, he shared it, much to the chagrin of his family.

As per his wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to your local blood bank, Hospice House, or Alzheimers/Dementia Organization.

The family would also like to thank the special people in his life at Riverside Village, in Elkhart, IN, and the helpful staff of Hospice House in Elkhart, along with Palmer Funeral Homes for their assistance. Online condolences may be left at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com. The family takes comfort in knowing that Dannie crossed over Moon River in his own style as only he could.
