Herbert M. “Herb” Reeves, 74, passed away peacefully following an extended illness at Elkhart General Hospital on Tuesday morning, April 4, 2017.

He was born Sept. 2, 1942, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, to the late Herbert M. Reeves Jr. and Edna M. (Croxen) Reeves who survives him in Elkhart.

He later married Delores E. “Dee” Whitmer in Elkhart Dec. 12, 1992.She survives him at home.

Also surviving are his children, Mark (Salome) Reeves of Culver City, California and Christy (Ty) Mishler of Elkhart; stepchildren David (Gael) Harris of Granger and Barbara (Thomas) Balbo of Bradenton, Florida, and siblings Thomas E. Reeves of Elkhart and Susan M. Clark of Hudson, Florida.

Herb also has several grandchildren including Scott Mishler and Arman Reeves.

A niece, Chelsea Clark, precedes him in death.

Herb was a career firefighter with the city of Elkhart for more than 20 years, retiring in 1988 after spending most of his time as station captain at 3 house.

He was also a member of the Elkhart Moose Lodge No. 599 and enjoyed golf, NASCAR, old war movies and anyone who was playing against Notre Dame.

He was also a John Wayne movie aficionado, a master woodworker and craftsman and an avid fan of his beloved Chicago Cubs.

He was also an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving in France during the Vietnam war as a military air traffic controller.
