Born in Fairview,Buncombe County,North Carolina,son of Alonzo Garland and Nellie Anne Bass Marlowe.
Graduated from Fairview High School in 1936,received a diploma from Mars Hill College in 1938;B.S.degree in Agricultural Education from North Carolina State College,with honors,in 1940;the ASTP Certification of Completion,Advanced Personnel Psych from the State University of Iowa in 1944;M.S.degree in Animal Industry from North Carolina State in 1949; and the Ph.D.degree in Animal Genetics and Physiolgy from Oklahoma State University in 1954.
On March 3,1945 he married Christine Williamson of Buffalo Junction,Mecklenburg County,Virginia.

Military Record
During World War II,from September 1942 to May 1946,he served in the United States Army;in 1945 he was in charge of Agriculture Rehabilitation in the Philippines for the Armed Forces;served as liaison between Armed Forces of the Pacific and Philippine Department of Agriculture;after the war he served as procurement control officer and officer in charge of Yokohama Branch of the General Purchasing Agent's Office,General Headquarters,Supreme Commander Allied Powers,in Japan form six months.Entered the Army Reserve in May 1946 and served for 20+years,holding the rank of Lt.Colonel.
