Helen was born in Waukegan, Illinois on May 17, 1928, to George John Petraitis and Salome Petruskevich, Lithuanian immigrants who arrived in the United States about 1906. Stella was their first child; Helen their second. Helen attended schools in Waukegan and spent her first 33 years there.
After graduating from Waukegan Township High School in 1945, she was employed by American Steele And Wire Division as an accounting clerk. In 1954 she married Robert William Cappetto.
In 1961 she, her husband and three children moved to La Crescenta, California to be near Robert's family. In June 1968, 36 hours after Robert Kennedy was shot, Helen's husband died.
After his burial, Helen and her three children, Teresa, Lawrence and John, flew to Grand Junction, Colorado where they established their new home. In 1974 Helen was employed at the United States Postal Service as a clerk, and retired after 16 years of service.
Fifteen years later she retired from service at Faith Heights Church. By the time of her earthly departure, she knew she had been living in The Lord's plan since she became born again as a new creature in 1976.
Helen's parents preceded her in death, as did her sister, Stella, and brother-in-law, Ray Niemi.
She is survived by her children: Teresa (Dean, deceased) Daley, Lawrence (Nancy) Cappetto and John (Carla) Cappetto; grandchildren: Marc (Trisha) Galyean, of Mexico, Roxanne (Jeremy) Abeyta, Rachel Cappetto and Timothy Cappetto; her inherited grandchildren: Isaac, Larry Joe Lane Jr. (Keisha), Angela (Brooks) Hermann, Tom (Lisa) Daley; and numerous great-grandchildren, all of Grand Junction; and nephews: Art Niemi, of McKinney, TX, and Bob (Patt) Niemi, of Cherokee Village, AR.
Helen's children, grandchildren, Faith Heights Church family and friends helped to make her life truly enjoyable for which she was very grateful. She was extremely blessed by her doting, caring, generous children.
Private family burial service will be at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado on Tuesday, March 28, 10:00 a.m., with memorial service to follow at Faith Heights Church, 600 28 ¼ Road, Grand Junction, Colorado at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 28.
