Raymond Albert is known to have volunteered for service in the United States Navy during WWII. There is a record of a Emerson R. Albert entering the service on October 7, 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. Could this be our Raymond Albert? Raymond Albert was twenty years old when he joined the crew of the PT-109, which was skippered by LtJG John Fitzgerald Kennedy. S1C Raymond Albert survived the famous PT-109 ordeal, which occurred just after 2 A.M. on August 2, 1943 when the Japanese destroyer Amagiri rammed the PT 109. The surviving members of the crew were rescued after 6 harrowing days on August 8, 1943. Raymond Albert then went on to serve on PT-163.
On October 8, 1943, exactly two months after his rescue from his PT-109 ordeal, S1C Raymond Albert was killed by a Japanese Prisoner of War. The Battle of Vella Lavella was a naval battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II fought on the night of 6 October 1943, near the island of Vella Lavella in the Solomon Islands. It marked the end of a three month fight to capture the central Solomon Islands, as part of the Solomon Islands Campaign. The battle took place at the end of the ground campaign on Vella Lavella, as the Japanese sought to evacuate the 600-strong garrison from the island. The garrison had become hemmed into a small pocket on the northern end of the island around Marquana Bay. While a force of around 20 auxiliary ships and barges evacuated the stranded soldiers, a force of nine Japanese destroyers fought a short, but sharp engagement with six US Navy destroyers to the north of the island diverting attention from the evacuation. As a result of the engagement, the Japanese evacuation effort was successfully concluded. Each side lost one destroyer sunk. The Japanese lost their destroyer Yugumo.
On October 7, 1943, PT-163 picked up survivors from the Japanese destroyer Yugumo and one of those POW's made it known to Albert that he needed a drink of water. When Albert went o give him a drink, the POW grabbed a machine gun from Raymond Albert, put the barrel against his chest and shot him. Raymond Albert died on deck, the Japanese POW and several other POWs who had jumped to their feet were killed by another crewman of the PT-163. Seaman 1st Class Raymond Albert's mortal remains must have initially been buried on a nearby island in a temporary cemetery from seaman killed in the Solomon Islands. Raymond Albert's are believed to have been returned to the states in 1948. The June 19, 1948 edition of the Cleveland Press contained the following obituary;
"Albert, Raymond, Seaman 1-C, killed in action Oct. 7, 1943. Pacific area, beloved son of Louis and Sara of 1040 Carlyon Rd., brother of Paul, Theodore and Mrs. Rosalind Schuler. Services Sun., July 11, at 12 noon at the Cohn-Margowsky Inc. Memorial Chapel, 772 E. 105th St. Services under the auspices of the Jewish War Veterans."
