Julia K. Maurer, age 97, formerly of Montgomery, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on January 17, 2017 after a long illness. She was born in Ohio on October 28, 1919, the second daughter of Dallas and Flora (Myers) Koons. After graduating from high school, she attended Heidelberg College for two years, then married Maurer Maurer, a high school music teacher. The couple had one daughter, Julie Loftin of Ann Arbor, Michigan. After completing a PhD in history Maurer accepted a position as a military historian at Wright-Patterson AFB, and in 1955 transferred to Maxwell AFB in Montgomery. Julia considered Montgomery her true home. She was an active member of Frazer UMC, attending the Roy Cox Sunday School class, family night suppers, sanctuary care, senior aerobics, and 4th Thursday groups. She was an energetic woman, who lived her life joyfully and enthusiastically. She had many varied interests, including gardening, playing bridge and quilting. She was an accomplished needle worker, and made more than 30 beautiful, handstitched quilts. When she became ill in 2007, she moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to be closer to family. Although she missed her many Montgomery friends and Frazer UMC, she was happy being close to her family in Ann Arbor, and being able to attend family reunions with her nieces and nephews in Ohio.
Julia was predeceased in 2002 by her husband of 63 years, Maurer Maurer, and her sister Marjorie White in 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Julie Loftin of Ann Arbor, Michigan; two grandchildren: Christopher (Tina) Loftin of Vineland, New Jersey, and Rebecca (Brett) Churchill, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; three great-grandchildren: Parker and Megan Churchill of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Gabrielle Loftin of Vineland, New Jersey. Also surviving are six cherished nieces and nephews: Dennis White, Tim White, Beth Miller, Jill Carothers, Sigrid Sharp, and Karen Whalen.
The family is grateful to the staff of Brookdale of Ann Arbor for their loving care of Julia for more than 9 years. A memorial service was held at Brookdale on January 20.
A graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, at 10:00AM, Monday, March 27, with Dr. Neil Epler, Frazer UMC Congregational Care Pastor, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Leak Memory Chapel, Montgomery, AL.
