Portland radio broadcaster and Libby High School graduate Heidi Matthew Tauber Esping died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, as a result of a car accident in Portland, Ore.

Tauber was 52-years-old and resided in the Rose City for nearly two decades. She came to Libby from La Jolla, Calif., with her parents Shirley (Matthews) and Richard Tauber in the third grade and lived in Libby until she graduated in 1977. The always outgoing Tauber was active at LHS where she was a cheerleader, a member of concert and swing choir, concert band and active in speech and drama. She attended the University of Montana and began a long career in television and radio broadcasting, starting at KLCB while in high school. Her career path took her to Yakima, Wash., and Redding, Calif., until settling in Portland.

Tauber was well known and well liked in the Portland radio market enjoying popular stops at KPOJ, KINK, KEX news radio, and most recently had been on the air with Oregon Public Broadcasting. Her peers respected her professionalism, and her warm voice and personality endeared her to her listeners.

A free spirit with a warm smile and infectious laugh, she lived her life on her terms. She was proud to have carved out a career in an industry that was not very welcoming to women when she started. She loved to tell the story of an early interview, where she was told, “There are no broads in broadcasting,” then would add with a confident grin; “Well, there is one now.”

Though her career took her to the “big city,” Libby always remained her home. She loved to spend time at her house on Pipe Creek which she still referred to as “Mom’s place” and hoped to retire in Libby. She had a long standing love affair with Turner Mountain, and saying it was just how she liked it; steep and deep. You could take the girl out of Montana, but not Montana out of the girl.

Heidi was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Julie. She is survived by her husband Ron Esping of Portland, and bothers Tom (Linda) Tauber of Sandpoint and Rick Tauber of Seattle.

There will be a celebration of Heidi’s life, Saturday, April 16 in Portland, at 1 p.m. at Village Baptist Church. Locally, there will be an informal gathering at the Red Dog Saloon for friends who wish to pay their respects, Saturday, April 9 beginning at 4 p.m.

Anyone wishing to honor Heidi’s memory can donate to the Heidi Tauber Memorial Ski Scholarship. The scholarship will provide an opportunity for local children to learn to ski on Turner Mountain. Tax deductable donations can be sent to: Kootenai Winter Sports, Heidi Tauber Memorial Ski Scholarship, P.O. Box 210, Libby, MT 59923-0210
