John Michael D'Abruzzo was born on June 24, 1946, in Sant'Angelo del Pesco, Italy.  He immigrated to the United States at age 11 with his family.

He attended St. Canice Catholic Grade School in the Knoxville neighborhood of the South Hills of Pittsburgh, then the Connelley Trade School in Downtown Pittsburgh. The Clifford B. Connelley Vocational High School, designed by Pittsburgh architect Edward B. Lee,  opened in 1931 and was considered one of the premier trade schools in the country. High school students from throughout the city had the opportunity to be introduced to careers in construction by learning carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and automobile repair. Overlooking Downtown Pittsburgh from Bedford Avenue in the Hill District, the Classical Revival and Art Deco school exposed students to a myriad of career opportunities. The trade school took its name from Clifford Brown Connelley, who served as Commissioner of the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry from 1919-1923. Connelley was a pioneer and lifelong advocate of technical and industrial education. The school closed in 2004 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
