Bettie Roye West Close passed away Feb. 24 surrounded by family. She was born September 23, 1921 in Crockett, Texas, and graduated from New Waverly High School in 1937. At the age of 16, Bettie enrolled in classes at Sam Houston College, where she graduated in 1941.

Bettie came to Austin in 1941, and resided in the Austin area until her death. She was employed by the State of Texas Health Department, and retired as a chemist in the water division in 1976.

She was married to Garland H. Close on June 5, 1949. They enjoyed 49 happy years together. She and Garland were longtime members of the First United Methodist Church in Downtown Austin.

Bettie was preceded in death by her parents J. Homer West and Bettie Dawes West, husband Garland, son Gary and nephew Earl Halmon. She is survived by her daughter Gaye Close Aaron and husband Lonnie Aaron; granddaughter Beth Phillips and husband John Phillips; great grandsons Aaron, Dean and Hunter; niece Nelle Palmer; niece Wanda Halmon (wife of Earl Halmon) and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

Bettie will lie in state from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2017 at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 N. Lamar Blvd.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Austin Memorial Park, 2800 Hancock Drive in Austin.

In lieu of flowers, it is Bettie's request that all who loved her will spend a little extra time with family and friends and make a donation to a charity that is close to your heart.
