Francis William Tucker
December 18, 1929 - February 7, 2017

Francis William Tucker, age 87, passed away February 7, 2017 at his home near Lynchburg after an extended illness. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, June Renegar Tucker; three children: Kevin Tucker (Carol) of Madison, AL, Cathy Acuff (Ken) of Tullahoma, and John Tucker of Meridianville, AL, and two grandsons: Paul Tucker of Madison, AL and Jeff Acuff (Rachel) of Huntsville, AL. Born on December 18, 1929 in Detroit, MI, he was the youngest of the three children of Herman and Bess Tucker. His brother, Paul, and sister, Madge, preceded him in death.

Francis was a Christian and at the time of his death was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fayetteville. As his health declined, especially in recent months, he looked more and more to heaven. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord in a place where there are neither tears nor pain nor death.

Francis worked for the Army Corps of Engineers at Camp Forrest in Tullahoma in the mid-1950s before taking a job with the Army Ballistic Missile Agency in Huntsville in 1958. In 1959, he was transferred with the von Braun Team to the newly formed NASA. Francis became a charter member of the Marshall Space Flight Center when it was established in 1960. He worked on multiple programs at Marshall that culminated in the successful manned lunar landing in 1969. He also participated in the design of the emergency repair kit for Skylab, America’s first space station, in 1973.

After his retirement from NASA in 1981, Francis continued working on space and military programs, most notably at Micro Craft in Tullahoma. He was responsible there for the design, production, and delivery to Marshall of several full-scale mock-ups of early designs of Space Station modules.

While Francis was involved in many activities outside of work, his greatest joy was being surrounded by his family and friends. His home was the gathering place for many birthday celebrations, wonderful holiday meals and summer cookouts. Whatever the occasion, storytelling was always on the menu.

Francis and June bought and renovated on old home near Lynchburg in the early 1990s. The restored house became home to the Tucker Inn Bed and Breakfast. For several years, Francis and June enjoyed hosting people there from all walks of life. The Tucker Inn was known for its warm and friendly innkeepers as well as its wonderful country breakfasts.

Funeral services will be Thursday, February 9 at 3:00 pm at the Jennings Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Lynchburg, TN with Dr. John Hathcock officiating. Visitation will precede the funeral from 1:00-3:00 pm. Pall bearers will be Paul Tucker, Jeff Acuff, Keith Richardson, Josh Owens, Walt Harris, Randy Renegar, Matthew Cashion and Larry Hatfield. Burial will be in the Lynchburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Lakewood Baptist Church Benevolence Fund at 2101 Madison Lake Road, Huntsville, AL 35810.
