The youngest son of Joel Coleman and Sally Harlow. He was born on the farm in the town of Hamptonburgh, NY where he always lived, growing to manhood on the same place where his father and grandfather lived. He received a common school education, which with his natural ability, made him successful in his farming operations. He married first Frances Alida, daughter of General Calvin G Sawyer, who lived but a few years after their marriage. This union was blessed with one son, Calvin Sawyer. He afterwards married for his second wife, Abby Ann, daughter of Josiah Jackson and Susan Seely. They had no children.

He was a man of sterling integrity in all of his business relations, of correct habits, had the confidence of his fellow men, always seeming happy, meeting and greeting his neighbors with a smile and cordial hand shake and was very successful as a farmer. He had one-half of his grandfather's large farm, on which he lived during his long and useful life, and where his death occurred. He was short in stature, with a powerful frame and capable of great endurance, which is one of the chief attributes of a successful farmer. Later in life he was stricken with paralysis, which in a few years caused his death.
