BURLINGTON - George Fitts Tyson, Jr., of Mebane, died Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at his residence.

The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of the Mebane United Methodist Church on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 1:30 p.m.

A Memorial Service celebrating his life will follow at 3 p.m. officiated by Rev. Johnnie Wright.

George was born March 31, 1922 in Durham, NC to George Tyson, Sr., and Margaret Cameron Tyson.

He was married to Jean Stephens Tyson for 67 wonderful years raising their family first in Durham and later in Mebane, NC.

He graduated from Durham High School in 1940. Afterward, he served in the US Army during World War II where he was awarded a Battlefield Commission as a Second Lieutenant. George remained in the Army Reserves and retired in 1982 at the rank of Colonel. His decorations include two Bronze Star medals and two Purple Hearts. Later in 2014, he was awarded the Legion of Honor medal which is the highest decoration bestowed by the French Government to US soldiers who fought on French territory in WWII in order to liberate France.

George graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1950 with a degree in Business Administration.

Afterward, he worked for Cary Lumber Company in Durham, and in 1959 moved to Mebane where he was employed by Mebane Lumber Company for 28 years. After his retirement, George embarked on his second career as a General Contractor building many homes in the Durham/ Mebane area until his final retirement in 2008.

He was a proud member of the Mebane United Methodist Church for more than 50 years serving in many capacities. His strong tenor voice was heard in the Chancel Choir until he was 93 years old.

George was known for his love of family, his amazing energy, his strong determination, his compassion for others, and his beautiful smile. He loved watching sports events, especially supporting his Carolina Tarheels, collecting stamps, playing the violin in his younger years, discussing politics, writing about World War II, and interacting with his family, as well as, his many good friends.

He is survived by his three children, Sandra Smith (Kent) of Southern Pines, NC, Susan Scott (Loman) of Oak Island, NC, and Steve Tyson (Bobbee) of Mebane, NC; his six grandsons, Jonathan Smith, Matthew Smith, Benjamin Scott (Jessica), Daniel Scott (Joanna), Kenneth Tyson, and Will Tyson; and his three great-grandchildren, Hudson, Caroline, and Hailey.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations can be made to the Mebane United Methodist Church, 200 S 4th Street, Mebane, NC 27302 or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

The family wants to extend their sincere thanks to the Hospice Staff and to his special nurses, Sabrina, Mary, Sierra and Lynn.
