The tall, black granite replacement headstone for John and Nancy Butcher stands prominently in the middle of the Butcher Cemetery with the one line verse of "He is not dead."

Page 559 of the book "A Biographical History of Champaign County, Ohio" by the Lewis Publishing Company, 1902, contains a biographical account of the life of Dr. John C. Butcher, son of Dr. John (J.M.S.) and Nancy Jane (Brock) Butcher. A paragraph is devoted to the life of the elder Dr, Butcher and his wife, "…He was one of the pioneer physicians of Ohio … locating in Belmont County, when he later moved to Champaign County, locating at North Lewisburg." In an August 1894 interview with Rev. Edward C. Young of the North Lewisburg Friends Church, he said, "Dr. Butcher is not a Friend but an aggressive man and important helper." Per the Butcher Family Bible in the possession of Mr. Stephen Smith's mother, John Milton Butcher was born on September 23, 1816. His parents were Jeremiah and Hannah Butcher.

Dr. John Milton Butcher was married twice. First, to Mary Ann Johnson who was born on December 15, 1816. They married on December 8, 1836. Mary Anne Johnson Butcher died on February 10, 1842. On February 23, 1843, Dr. John Milton Butcher married Nancy Brock who was born on September 22, 1823. Nancy Brock Butcher died on August 8, 1898.
