William R. (Bill) Gwin

William R. (Bill) Gwin, 88, retired businessman of Indianola, died Wednesday, October 19 at South Sunflower County Hospital in Indianola.

Mr. Gwin was born in Lexington, the son of William Edward Gwin and Mattie Mae Watson Gwin. He attended the University of Mississippi and afterwards helped manage the Watson Plantation at Heathman. In 1931 he moved to Houston, Texas where he worked in the engineering department at Houston Power and Light Company. He and Vera Brantley Godbold of Heathman were married in 1931 and, in 1946 he returned to Indianola to manage the Gresham Appliance Center. In 196O he established the Gwin Appliance Center which he owned and operated until he retired at the age of eighty.

An active member of the community, Mr. Gwin was a past president of the Indianola Country Club, a former deacon of the First Presbyterian Church, a former chairman of the merchants committee of the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Indianola Rotary Club and had served on the Board for Troop 41 of the Boy Scouts.

He is survived by a daughter, Melinda Godbold Gwin of Greenwood; 2 sons, William Rayford Gwin, Jr. of Auburn, Alabama, and James Godbold Gwin of Los Angeles, California; two sisters, Elizabeth Gwin and Mrs. Ann Hedgepeth, both of Atlanta, Georgia; - grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22 at the First Presbyterian Church of Indianola. Burial was in the Indianola Cemetery with Card Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be sent to French Camp Academy, the First Presbyterian Church of Indianola or the Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship Fund.
