PLAINVILLE — Sister Ampelia Acuna, RJM, 80, of Plainville, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 in the Madonna Manor Nursing Home, North Attleboro.

Born on February 3, 1936 in Huejucar, Jalisco, Mexico, she was a daughter of the late Jose Guadalupe Acuna and Francisca Raigosa Acuna.

Sister Acuna entered the RJM congregation in El Paso, TX, on August 15, 1961 and made her first vows on March 30, 1964. She professed her perpetual vows as RJM on March 30, 1970 In El Paso, TX.

Sister Acuna became a naturalized American citizen on November 30, 1990 in El Paso, TX and obtained her GED in New York on March 17, 1979. She took courses and served as liturgist and religious education teacher in several parishes from the West Coast to the East coast: in California, Texas, Maryland, New York and MA.

She served the Religious of Jesus and Mary in their infirmaries in MD and MA. Sister Acuna was devoted in providing whatever services were requested.

She is survived by her five sisters: Olivia Holguin of Duncanville, TX; Maria J. Herrera of Hurley, NM; Teresa Acuna, Luz E. Juarez and Carmen Valladolid, all of El Paso, TX; her two brothers, Jose Acuna and his wife Yolanda of Red Oak, TX and Miguel Acuna of El Paso, TX and numerous nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews and many cousins.

She was the sister of the late Juan M. Acuna.

All her religious sisters of Jesus and Mary in the USA and throughout the world are grateful to have had Ampelia as our sister, and we miss her and now pray To Her, for intercession.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation in St. Martha’s Church, South Street, Plainville, followed by a Mass of Christian burial in the church. Burial in St. Jean de Baptist’s Cemetery, Bellingham MA.
