The youngest son of Henry Schlott and Leah Fresher, Samuel was orphaned as a boy in 1847, and was sent to live with his uncle Jacob Schlott in Stark County, Ohio. He married Sarah Meyers on May 8, 1854, two days before his 16th birthday. They had one child, George Washington Schlott, born May 28, 1854.

He left Ohio about 1855 and went to Indiana, and then to Illinois where he found work as a miller. Sarah filed for divorce on December 31, 1855.

Samuel married Helen Mariah Danforth on July 11, 1858 in Kankakee, Illinois. They had two sons, Arteller M. and Richard Lyle Sloat. Samuel and Helen were divorced in 1865, probably April 11.

Samuel's last name was originally spelled "Schlott", but about 1860 he began using the spelling "Slote". After the divorce, his two sons used the spelling, "Sloat".

The 1870 Root's Peoria City Directory lists Samuel as living there, working as a miller, while the 1870 Census shows Helen living with her parents and two boys in Kankakee.

Samuel married Elizabeth Beaver on September 23, 1880 in Kansas City, Missouri. They lived in Kansas City for several years, and then moved to Wichita about 1886. Samuel and Lizzie had one child, Ruby Estelle Slote, born in Wichita in 1888.

Samuel continued working as a miller, and had his own mill for a few years in Wichita on the Little Arkansas River at 21st Street. He sold the mill when he got too old to run it, and worked at odd jobs until he died in 1906 of "reumatism + apoplexy".
