Samuel's last name was originally spelled "Schlott", but about 1860 he began using the spelling "Slote". After the divorce, his two sons used the spelling, "Sloat".
The 1870 Root's Peoria City Directory lists Samuel as living there, working as a miller, while the 1870 Census shows Helen living with her parents and two boys in Kankakee.
