They had six children: John William (1856-1932),Lucius Ernest (1857-1894),Junius Emmett Eppes (1859-1896), Ella Rose (1861-1900), Alice Wade (1864-1881), Henry Carlton (1868-1927).
On 19 May 1861 Colonel Hamlin enlisted Hadrian as an officer in Company A of the Third Regiment of Virginia Cavalry at Dinwiddie Courthouse. On 18 June the Third Lieutenant went home to recuperate from a wound, one month into the conflict. He was wounded at Young's Mill near Yorktown and never recovered to be fit for duty.
