John was one of few city officials anywhere who had served in all phases of city government. He began as a volunteer fireman at an early age and worked his way up in the fire department, becoming Fire Chief. He served as School Commissioner, and Roads and Street Commissioner. His first elective office came in 1961 when he was elected for a four year term as City Commissioner. He was reelected in 1965 but became Mayor in 1968 after the death of Mayor Clint H.Putman. He was elected to the City Council in 1971 and 1975. John also served as chairman of the Board of Rockwood Electric Utility since 1971. He was a past Chancellor Commander of Oak Leaf Lodge No.49, Knights of Pythias and also belonged to the Elks Club Jr. Order United American Mechanics and Eagles.
Catherine I. Allen Albertson was named to the Rockwood City Council to fill her late husband's seat on the board, becoming the first women ever to serve on the city's governing body. The resolution naming Catherine for the post was presented by Councilman Ted Cooley, who stated that she had worked closely with her husband in his political career for many years and that she had expressed an interest in continuing his work in city government.
